Department Features

Artificial intelligence is a scientific field to materialize information systems to help human beings think creatively rather than to be simply operated by human beings. The Department of Artificial Intelligence aims to produce engineers who can build new information technologies for proper collaboration between human beings and computers, using language, voice, images and other media.
The Department of Artificial Intelligence provides education programs on computer science and artificial intelligence from both aspects of basic theory and application/practice. The students learn industrial-ready technologies for companies including IT-related firms, and gain academic knowledge useful in the future.
The department welcomes students who are excellent at mathematical proof and logical thinking, and can carry out difficult tasks.
If you address challenges from basic to application of information technologies, you will expand the field if artificial intelligence.

Curriculum

In order to instill the knowledge and technologies for developing such intelligent information systems, the curriculum for the Department of Artificial Intelligence is designed to reach the following goals.

  • Acquire the knowledge and skills for developing various intelligent information systems through the basic grasp of computer science and information processing technology.
    Courses:
    Computer programming, data structure and algorithms, programming for systems design, object-oriented programming, computer systems, mathematical logic, automata and language theory, logical circuit, computer networks, etc.
  • Develop a novel technique of intelligent information processing in which computers collaborate with human beings, by learning various technologies in intelligent information processing.
    Courses:
    Basic of AI, Al programming, AI system design, logic and proofs, inference and learning, the basis of knowledge, natural language processing, pattern understanding, computer vision, computer graphics, etc.
  • ・Master the basics of mathematics and natural science.
    Courses:
    Linear algebra, analysis, discrete mathematics, probability and statistics, applied analysis, differential equations, mechanics, electromagnetics, modern physics, etc.

Research

The Department of Artificial Intelligence is further divided into the following three “sections of study,” and is advancing high-level research on information technologies.

・Mathematical Information Section: 
To explicate the process of intelligent activities based on the logical reasoning by human beings and the create novel methods of problem-solving by implementing them on computers.
Topics: Automated reasoning by logic, data compression, retrieval and mining, development of various efficient algorithms, control theory, etc.
・AI Architecture Section:
To establish the technologies of designing hardware and software systems necessary for the development of the next-generation intelligent information processing systems.
Topics: Computer systems at cutting edge, parallel and distributed environment, programming languages, new technology for software design, etc.
・Media Informatics Section:
To develop essential technologies to make computers human-friendly, such as natural language interfaces and automated visual recognition.
Topics: Intelligent tutoring systems, artificial intelligence techniques applied to games, computer graphics, pattern recognition, image processing, information extraction and classification from natural language, etc.
